Why Do We Celebrate Memorial Day? |
Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor and remember those men and women who lost their lives in military service to their country. The day is a federal U.S. holiday, held on the last Monday of May each year.
The holiday was formerly known as "Decoration Day," and was started originally as a day to remember Union soldiers who lost their lives during the Civil War, but was broadened later to remember those who lost their lives in service during World War I, and then in subsequent military wars, actions, or service.
Observances of the day include memorial services, parades, visiting military memorial sites or cemeteries, and flying the U.S. flag at half-staff.
